With all of the fake news circulating and fall out from the media coverage of the election, no group of people have headed the call for a more informed citizenry than social studies teachers. This excellent article from the Smithsonian Institute breaks down the crucial role social studies education plays in developing critical and thoughtful citizens who can note only discern fake news but find their voice to demand change from their government and their media.
Now is the perfect time to reinvigorate ourselves with the moral cause of our profession. At Middle States Council for Social Studies we offer many ways to do this!
- Nominate or self-nominate a well-deserving educator, researcher or friend of the social studies for an award. The application is here and nominations are due by January 16th.
- Submit conference proposals for our Annual Conference by December 19th.
- Register for the Annual conference held Friday, February 24th – Saturday February 25th 2017 at the Atlantic Sands Hotel & Conference Center in beautiful Rehoboth, DE.
- Support the annual conference and further the cause by being an exhibitor.
